Lions, Eagles face off on baseball diamond

The Crossett baseball team beat the Hamburg Lions 17-2 Friday night in Crossett.

In the first inning Hamburg’s Drake Rice hit a single with two outs on the board, but was left stranded on base. Crossett came into bat and got a 4-0 jump on the Lions and batted through the entire lineup.

Jackson Moore started the Eagles off with a line drive double. Stetson Bishop moved him around to third and Jack Rice knocked him in.

Rice stole around to third and was knocked in with a single by Chase Golden, but Mason Taunton was thrown out. Bennett Holt batted Golden in to make the score 3-0. Max Brooks moved base runners and sent B. Wright in, making the score 4-0. The Eagles batted all the way back around to Moore, who was struck out by Bobby Rainey to send the Eagles back out onto the field to start the second inning.

In the top of the second, Lion Gannon Vail walked on base and Tyler Jacks hit a double, but both were left stranded on base when Jack Rice caught the third out. The Lions took the field trailing 4-0.

Hamburg fought back from the field, however, when Drake Rice caught a pop up to short and Bruin Barnes caught a fly in left field, putting two outs on the board for the Eagles. Eagle Mason Taunton got on with a ground ball to shortstop. Golden knocked Taunton around to third and Wright brought him home to make the score 5-0.

Holt batted Wright in, but was left stranded on base when Brent Holland threw Brooks out at first. The Eagles took the field to start the third leading 7-0.

Lion batters Bruin Barnes, Dalton Gill and Drake Rice loaded the bases with only one out on the board.

Two strikeouts by Bishop left them stranded and they took the field for the bottom of the third.

The Eagles went three up three down and the score remained at 7-0 going into the fourth inning.

The Lions finally got a run across in the top of the fourth. Jacks and Gatlin Hale both hit singles to get on base and Tony Ramirez knocked Hale in for the first Lion score.

Bruin Barnes walked on, but he and Ramirez were both left stranded on base when third baseman Brooks threw Drake Rice out at first to force the Lions back on the field with a 7-1 score.

Crossett’s Jack Rice got on base with a single and Taunton’s successful turn at bat sent him home, making the score 8-1. Golden batted Taunton around to third and Holt knocked him in for another Eagle run. Eric Massenburg went in to run for Holt and was moved to second with a hit by Brooks and scored on a hit by Moore.

Bishop moved the runners and brought Brooks in for the 13th run. Jack Rice in turn sent Moore home to make it 14-1. Taunton and Golden each knocked runs in and Taunton stole home for the final Eagle score of the night.

The Eagles took the field to start the fifth leading 17-1. Brent Holland got on with a double and Vail knocked him in with a double, but Vail was ultimately left stranded on third, making the final score 17-2. The Eagles didn’t take the field for the bottom of the fifth and the final score went in the books.

The Eagles are now 5-7 for the season with their next conference game scheduled for Thursday when they will travel to Watson Chapel. Their next home game will be next Tuesday when they host the Warren Lumberjacks.
