The Lady Eagles finished second in the Drew Central Holiday Classic, which wrapped up early last week.
The Crossett team started out with a 51-40 victory over Parkers Chapel on Dec. 27. In Round 2, they beat White Hall 37-32 to advance to the championship round, which was played Dec. 31.
In the championship match, the Lady Eagles faced the tournament hosts, the Drew Central Lady Pirates.
The Lady Eagles fell 62-50 in a close match.
Coach Shanae Govan said the players struggled with free throws and got in foul trouble too early.
“We didn’t score the ball well, mainly because we missed 18 free throws and lost by 12, so that hurt us,” Govan said.
Though they didn’t bring home the championship title, Govan said she was proud of her team’s overall perfomance in the tournament.
“I was pleased that we got runner-up considering the last two years we’ve lost in the first round, so to advance this far this year says that our program is going in the right direction,” Govan said.
“It was a great way to end 2019 getting ready to head into 2020 conferenc play.”
The Lady Eagles spent the end of last week preparing to travel back to Monticello to face the Billies in the first conference game of the season.
The Billies are undefeated this season.
The Eagles played on Tuesday night, but results were not available at press time. Friday the girls will travel with the senior boys team to Magnolia for another conference game and Tuesday they will travel to Camden.
The Lady Eagles will not play at home until Jan. 20, when they host Jack Robinson from Little Rock.
