The Lady Eagles basketball team is now 2-0 after winning their second game of the season on Thursday when they hosted the Smackover Buckaroos.
“I was proud of how we weathered the storm of adversity because we did not shoot the ball well but we did other things well,” Crossett Coach Shanae Govan said.
The Lady Eagles stayed in the lead for the entire game. They were leading 21-9 at the beginning of the second quarter when the Buckaroos started slowly closing the gap. The score was 21-15 when Jaylynn Hampton stole the ball and finished with a fast break layup, making the score 23-15.
Jada Cooks stole the ball again and passed it mid-court to Shekirra Gavin, who finished with a layup to push the Lady Eagle lead up to 25-15.
“We had a lot of transition baskets and got a few steals which led to layups,” Govan said.
The girls went in for half time with the Lady Eagles leading 32-19.
The team ultimately finished the game with a 49-35 win.
Govan said Anaya Jones and Gavin were key players who kept the tempo up through the entire game.
“They were the motor to our engine,” Govan said.
The coach said the Lady Eagles will spend this week’s break preparing to play Drew Central.
“I’m thankful that we’ve gotten off to a good start, and I’m glad the fans came to support us again,” Govan said.
The boys team was scheduled to play last Thursday, but the game was postponed because the Smackover football team was currently playing in the 3A football playoffs.
The basketball teams will not play next week during the holiday break, but will travel to Drew Central on Nov. 27 to face the Drew Central Pirates.
