The Hamburg Lions baseball team won two out of three games played over school’s Spring Break.

On Thursday the Lions beat Bauxite High School 6-2.

Hamburg got a jump in the top of the first take the lead 3- with hits from Nigel Lewis, Connor Jones and Toby Spurlock.

In the bottom of the first Gavin Harrod walked the first batter, but struck the next three out to bring the Lions back in to hit.

Nigel Lewis opened the second inning with a hit and was knocked around to third. Lewis stole home to bring the score to 4-0.

In the bottom of the second, two walks and a single set Bauxite up to score and they finally moved a run across the plate.

The Lions came in to start the third inning still leading 4-0.

Ballard walked on base and Lewis knocked him in with a triple and the Lions were in the lead 5-1.

A Bauxite hitter opened the bottom of the third with a homerun giving them another run, but Harrod picked a runner off and got two strikeouts to bring the Lions in to start the fourth.

The Lions didn’t score again until the top of seventh when Brayden Berry sacrificed to bring Bruin Barnes in for the final run of the game.

On Friday the Lions fell 16-3 to Harding Academy. The only runs scored by Hamburg were in the bottom of the sixth when Lewis hit a double to knock Spurlock and Landon Ballard to home plate. Harrod knocked Berry in with a single.

On Saturday, the Lions won 9-5 against Mayflower High School.

Zeroes remained on the scoreboard until the top of the third when Ballard knocked in Maddox Lackey. Ballard as knocked in by Drake Rice and Berry stole home. Lewis was hit by a pitch, but also made it around to home when Connor Jones hit a sacrifice fly to left. Nick Bridges knocked Rice in and the Lions managed to have five on the board before the third out.

Mayflower was able to get two runners on base in the bottom of the third, but the Lion defense held them.

Berry struck out one and Bridges in right and Lewis in center each caught fly balls to make three outs.

Mayflower scored again in the bottom of the fourth when a base runner managed to come in on a wild pitch.

In the top of the fifth, Rice hit a single and was knocked around by Spurlock to make the score 6-1 and Mayflower scored again in the bottom half making it 6-2. 

Lewis knocked Berry in for a run in the top of the sixth.

In the bottom half, Mayflower got two runs across and was only trailing by three points, 7-4.

Jones and Bridges scored the last two runs for the Lions, giving them nine to Mayflower’s four, and the Lions held Mayflower to only one run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Lions traveled to Monticello on Monday night, but results were not available at press time.

The Lions will travel to Magnolia on Thursday to face the Panthers and will play at home again on April 1.

The Lady Lions softball team did not play during the break, but are also scheduled to travel to Magnolia on Thursday. and play at home on April 1.
