The Crossett football team shut out Helena-West Helena’s Central Cougars on Friday.
The entire second half was played under the mercy rule — keeping the clock running no matter what — after the Eagles scored 35 unanswered points in the first half of play.
It took the Eagles a little bit to get going. On their first drive, Tyrique Jones threw an interception that was returned to the 11 yard line. The Eagle defense held the Cougars off for one snap, and on the next play Denzel Watkins snagged a Pick Six for the first Eagle score. Lisandro Mondragon kicked in the extra point and the Eagles were up 7-0.
The Eagles didn’t score again in the first quarter, but at the start of the second Jones ran 39 yards on a quarterback keeper to give the Eagles a second touchdown. Mondragon kicked in the extra point to put the Eagles up 14-0 with 11 minutes to play in the half.
The Eagles kicked off, but Fred Barnett forced a fumble on the return, bringing the Eagle offense right back to the field. The Eagles took over on the Central 28 and made their way to the red zone. The Central defense intercepted another pass, but Desmond Harris intercepted the ball on the next play to give the ball right back to the Eagles on the Central 14 yard line.
Tayshawn Paskel rushed the ball two yards and then 12 more to put the Eagles back in the end zone. The extra point kick was good and the Eagles led 21-0 with eight minutes still on the clock for the half.
The Eagle defense forced Central to punt, and on the next drive Jackson Moore ran the ball 43 yards for an Eagle touchdown. Mondragon’s extra point attempt was good and the Eagles led 28-0.
The Eagle defense again forced Central to punt, but Crossett’s offense couldn’t move the ball and punted right back. Denzel Watkins forced a fumble on the return, bringing the Eagle offense to the field on the Central 19 yard line. Jones completed a 19 yard pass to Dewayne Ashford and Crossett had another six points on the board. Mondragon kicked in another extra point to send the score to 35-0 with only seconds to play in the half.
The Eagles put two more touchdowns on the board after the break. Dwight Ashford snagged a pick six to give the Eagles 41 and Mondragon kicked in the PAT to make it 42-0. Jones completed a pass to Moore for the last touchdown of the game. The final score was 48-0.
The Eagles are scheduled to play Star City in Star City on Thursday night. This will be the Eagles’ last regular season game before the playoffs start the following Friday.
