The Crossett Eagle football season kicks off this week with an intersquad scrimmage.

The annual maroon and white game is scheduled for Friday night. The event gives fans the opportunity to experience Eagle football first hand and get a taste for the season.

Athletic Director Sonny Nason will coach the Eagles again this year and is taking over as offensive coordinator. Justin Skender will coach the defense for the second year with the assistance of James Adcock, Chuck Rawlings and a new hire, Kolby Stewart.

Nason said Rodney Lawson and Derrick Rodgers will return to assist with offense.

“It’s that time again, the summer was a short one, but we are getting ready,” Nason said.

Nason said fans will see starting quarterback, junior Justin Stokes, on one team, and senior Amaru Gibbs as quarterback on the other side.

Stokes, who is 6’1, 150 pounds, went in as quarterback last year and played 10 games, including a playoff game against Ozark.  He finished the season with 721 passing yards, averaging 72 yards per game.

“Gibbs will play as a wide receiver, but he will be out there as quarterback on Friday,” Nason said.

Gibbs is 5’6, 140 pounds and is one of 12 seniors on Crossett’s 2018 roster.

Gibbs, who was out with injuries during part of the year last year, ended the season with almost 500 all-purpose yards and ran in four touchdowns.

The Eagles lost a big chunk of their starters, including seven of their star players who went on to sign with colleges.

Some of the familiar returning faces include Robert Scates, who is a senior wide receiver; DeAndre Webb, a senior who plays multiple positions on offense and special teams; Jaylan Lawson, who is a junior running back; Kantrell Williams, who is a junior on free safety and punt return; Jalen Williams, a junior wide receiver; and Kason Brooks,  a junior wide receiver.

Returning defensive players include Trent Pullin, a senior defensive end; Deraymond Hermon, a junior defensive end; Javonte Jones,  a defensive lineman; and  junior Duece Hall, an inside linebacker.

The Eagles will scrimmage against each other on Friday night and will host a jamboree next Friday with Beekman and D’arbonne Charter of Farmerville.

The Eagles will play the Magnolia Panthers for their first regular season game Aug. 31.

Before the Eagles play on Friday, the junior high team, under Dustin Wolcott’s coaching, will kick off at 5:30 Friday night for their preseason maroon and white game.

Wolcott’s staff this year will be Kevin Strunk, Ashton Wilson, Austin Canady, Zach Harrison and Blake Hogue.

The junior Eagles will play on Thursday nights starting the week of Aug. 30.
