Eagles begin baseball season with win

Zeke Hopper pitches during the Crossett Eagles' season-opener against the Smackover Buckaroos.

The Crossett High School baseball team kicked off its season Monday night with a close win over Smackover

The Eagles hosted the Buckaroos and came from behind to win 3-2.

The Eagles were down 1-0 in the fourth inning with one out when Zeke Hopper walked on base.

Hopper was able to steal second on a passed ball when the pitcher attempted to pick him off.

Justin Stokes then hit a single to move the runner and Hopper scored by stealing home on a passed ball.

Cody Kelley hit a single to move Stokes on around. Once Kelley was on third, he attempted to steal second resulting in a throw down which ultimately ended with an out, but allowed Stokes to score the Eagles second run.

A pop up to short stop made the third out and the Eagles hit the field up 2-1.

The Eagles held Smackover to only one more run and Kelley was able to cross home plate for the Eagles before the end of the game to give them a 3-1 victory.

The Eagles traveled to El Dorado Tuesday to face Parkers Chapel, but results were not available at press time.

The Eagles play Oak Grove at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Monroe. The game will be their first in the Trey Altick Baseball Tournament hosted by West Ouachita High School. The tournament will last through Saturday.

The Eagles’ next home game will be 5 p.m. March 4 when the Eagles host Monticello.
