The Crossett Eagle baseball team held together to beat the Hamburg Lions for the second time this season.

The game was a tight one with Hamburg taking the lead by as much as three runs at one point during the night and pulling off a triple play in the third inning.

The Eagles batted first and after three singles in a row by Cody Kelley, Garrett Courson and Bennett Holt, they scored their first run.

Trent Pullin hit a sacrifice fly to knock Courson in, and two outs later the Eagles hit the field leading 2-0.

Nigel Lewis reached on error and Gavin Harrod was hit by a pitch giving the Lions two base runners. Drake Rice hit a single to move the base runners around putting Lewis on third base. Toby Spurlock hit a fly that turned into a double play. Paul Edgar caught the ball in right field and threw it to Courson, who tagged Harrod out on third, but not before Lewis was able to make it across home plate for the first Lion run.

Jack Rice threw the next batter out at first and the Eagles came into start the second inning leading 2-1.

Stetson Bishop opened with a double and was moved around to third with a single by Edgar. Brayden Berry struck a batter out and Kelley hit a sacrifice fly that knocked Edgar in to give the Eagles three runs. The first baseman, Spurlock, snagged a ground ball for the third out and the Lions came into bat.

After a pitch hit Berry, Dalton Gill hit a single and Bruin Barnes reached on error to load the bases. A single by Nick Bridges knocked Berry in to home, and Gill and Barnes scored on a single by Lewis to give the Lions the lead 4-3.

Harrod hit a hard ground ball to center field to move Bridges to third and Lewis to second, and with no outs on the board Hamburg had the bases loaded for the second time.

Drake Rice knocked in Bridges and Lewis to give the Lions six runs, but then the Eagle defense pulled it together.

Conner Williams caught a ball in right field, Pullin threw a runner out at home and Chance Golden struck Gill out to bring the Eagles in to bat.

In the top of the third, the Eagles had two runners on base and no outs when the Lions pulled a triple play. Jack Rice hit a line drive to Drake Rice on the mound, who then threw the ball to Lewis on short. Lewis was able to catch Holt advancing to third and then threw it to Berry, who caught Pullin moving to second.

The Eagles took the field, but got a quick three up three down and came in to start the fourth inning.

The first two Eagle batters struck out, but Paul Edgar got things going with a single to right field.

Williams reached base on an error by the right fielder, which moved Edgar around to third and Kelley knocked them both in. Courson and Holt both followed with singles and Kelley stole home to tie the score six-all. When a pitch hit Pullin, the bases were loaded. Courson then scored on a wild pitch before Harrod caught the third out in centerfield. The Eagles took the field leading by one run, 7-6.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hamburg tied the score seven-all. With two outs on the board, Spurlock hit a double to left field. Jones and Berry both followed with singles, moving Spurlock on around to home to tie the score. Jones tried to make it home on Berry’s hit behind Spurlock, but Holt tagged him at the plate to end the inning.

In the top of the fifth, the Eagles got one run across when a pitch hit Chase Golden and his courtesy runner was moved to second with a sacrifice hit by Bishop. The runner then stole his way around to home. Bruin Barnes caught the second out in right field and Harrod struck the next batter out to bring the Eagles on the field leading 8-7.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hamburg tied the score by scoring on a wild pitch. Dalton Gill hit a single and was moved around with a hit by Barnes. Gill’s courtesy runner stole home before the third out and the fifth inning ended with the score tied at eight.

The Eagles got a big jump in the top of the sixth and never looked back after that. Courson scored on a double by Holt, who then along with Zeke Hopper scored on a grounder by Pullin to give the Eagles 10 with only one out. An error got Jack Rice on base and Golden walked. Bishop was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Edgar hit a double to send Jack Rice and Golden in to take the Eagles to 12. Williams hit a grounder and was thrown out, but not before Bishop reached home plate and the Eagles took the field leading 13-8.

In the bottom of the sixth, Drake Rice walked on and was knocked in by Conner Jones to give Hamburg nine runs total. Hamburg loaded the bases again, but Golden struck out Gill, and Kelley caught a ball in left field to end the inning with the Eagles still in the lead 13-9.

The Eagles went three up three down and took the field for the bottom of the seventh. Berry caught a ball in center, Bridges caught a ball in left and Spurlock threw a runner out at first from the mound.

In the bottom of the seventh, Drake Rice knocked Bridges in to give the Lions 10 with only one out on the board, but Deuce Hall and caught a line drive and turned it into a double play to end the game.

The Eagles traveled to Warren on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. The Eagles will play Parkers Chapel on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

The Lions will host Monticello at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
