Crossett Elementary School fourth grade student Katelyn Richards recently won the fourth through sixth grade division of the SEARK Reading Council’s Young Writer’s Contest.

This year’s theme was “Why I Love Arkansas”, and students were asked to compose a narrative writing piece that accurately reflected thoughts on the subject.

Richards’ essay, “The Crescent Hotel Experience”, was chosen for the top prize from 56 entries in the fourth through sixth grade division and has been submitted to the Arkansas Literacy Association for their spring event, “Everyone’s an Author!”

Richards will be honored, along with the other winners, at the SEARK Reading Council meeting Jan. 28, where she will read from her essay and receive a cash prize.
