“If you see oppression of the poor and perversion of justice and righteousness in the province, don’t be astonished at the situation, because one official protects another official, and higher officials protect them.” Ecclesiastes 5:8

Speaking at MSU (Mississippi State University) several years ago, Representative Ron Paul told the crowd there is only one party in Washington. This is true! Career politicians, regardless of party affiliation, make up the national political class establishment. The wealthiest counties in America surround Washington, D.C. The richest residents of these counties are national politicians, lobbyists (many of whom began as politicians), bureaucrats, and those who support the establishment via many and sundry professions.

It doesn’t take someone as wise as Solomon to figure out “one official protects another official, and higher officials protect them.” Are there conspiracies in Washington? Investigations? Do our representatives and other establishment classes do anything else besides conspire, investigate, and grow power through bigger government?

One hundred years ago or so, President Woodrow Wilson schemed and dreamed of consolidating power in Washington, and using that power essentially to consolidate governance of nations via the League of Nations. Years later, President Franklin D. Roosevelt used the Great Depression as justification for growing the federal government, and mimicking the power structure of the Russian Empire at the time.

Today’s progressives in both parties find their roots and inspiration in Wilson, Roosevelt, and a cadre of other political operatives over the decades. The Washington establishment is essentially the progressive movement camouflaged by, you guessed it, conspiracies, investigations, and growing federal bureaucracies.

Things were moving swimmingly for the progressive movement until Donald Trump won the 2016 election. To be sure, Trump had played important bit parts in establishment politics mainly by funding various campaigns and politicians across the political spectrum. Nevertheless, Trump had something the vast majority of the political establishment did not have: his own wealth created by business deals. He was not dependent on the political establishment.

Nov. 9, 2016, there was a severe disruption in the force, uh, I mean the political establishment. How could this be? Trump was never part of the big picture, the plan to take over the world via globalism. Trump was only interested in making America great again!

Whereas those who have derived their money and power via the political establishment, i.e. the progressive movement, now surround Trump nearly universally, he has redirected governance and policies toward helping small businesses and the middle class by lowering taxes and reducing government regulations. This is precisely the problem! Contrary to their rhetoric, progressives need to keep their thumbs on small businesses (the nation’s largest employer) and the middle class to maintain political and governmental power.

Regardless of where one stands politically, we all have to admire the extraordinary extent to which the political establishment has gone to remove President Trump from the White House. It’s been quite of show with twists and turns and intrigues daily flashing across national headlines and sparkling banners on cable TV.

Like the preacher said, there’s nothing new under the sun. Those who know history can see the ebbs and flows of political thought from left to right and back to left again.

The preacher also wrote, “A wise person’s heart goes to the right, but a fool’s heart to the left.” Ecclesiastes 10:2
