Two men accused of serious crimes in separate cases in Ashley County are set to appear before the court in coming months.
In the first case, Erskine Flamer Jr., 24, of Eudora was arrested and charged with the murder of 25 year old Deunte Stanley after allegedly stabbing him to death in Pine Street Park on July 21.
The Hamburg police responded to the incident and — after hearing witness testimonies — arrested Flamer. Police Chief Johnny Oliver said that was Stanley was transported to Ashley County Medical Center, where he died from a single stab wound.
Flamer was formally charged by the Tenth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Deen with murder first degree and tampering with physical evidence on July 24.
A waiver of arraignment was filed with the Ashley County Circuit Clerk’s office Aug. 2 stating that Flamer demanded a jury trial.
Circuit Judge Robert Bynum Gibson signed an order last week setting hearings on Aug. 19 and Sept. 30 and a jury trial for the week of Oct. 22.
Flamer is currently represented by Joe Mazzanti with the public defender’s office.
In a separate case, a man accused of rape will go before a circuit judge later this month.
Elton Wayne Verdin of Hamburg was arrested in June and charged with sexual assault in the second degree, attempted rape and rape.
The criminal information affidavit filed with the Ashely County Circuit Clerk states that during the time period of Sept. 8, 2011 through Sept. 14, Verdin allegedly engaged in sexual activity with a child younger than 14 years of age.
Verdin was arrested in June and appeared before Gibson last week. Court documents say he signed a waiver of arraignment and demanded a jury trial. Verdin will be back in court on Aug. 19 for an omnibus hearing and his jury trial is set for October.
