Law enforcement officials are investigating after a handgun was found on Crossett High School property.

In a statement on the school district's website, Crossett School District officials said the weapon was found after, "the district learned of the possibility of a gun being left on the school grounds."

When investigating, officials found what the statement characterized as "a rusted handgun" near the drainage canal that divides the campus.

"Law enforcement was immediately contacted and a current investigation is underway," the CSD statement said.

School officials said that they were not aware of "any actual threat" that could be connected with the gun being on campus.

The statement ended with an affirmation that, "The safety of our students and staff is top priority."
