Hamburg School District’s Beatrice Dunn received special recognition by the board on Monday as the State of Arkansas’ 2022 School Bus Driver of the Year.

Dunn will be attending a ceremony in Hot Springs, Arkansas on June 20 to receive her award.

Dunn is known for “the extent to which (she) shows love to her children,” said HSD Transportation Director Chris Hammond, who nominated Dunn for the award.

“I always reach out to know what their ups and downs are,” said Dunn.

Dunn’s willingness to include families is an effort to provide the best experience for those students that she works with in her position as both bus driver and Win Room Teacher.

Dunn said she uses the topic of family to draw some students out of their shell.

“We walk around, talk about their family. I feel like when you talk about their family, they open up more.”

Dunn said it isn’t easy.

“It’s tough love, because they don’t want to at first,” but Dunn doesn’t give up.

“They’re unique and different, and other students look at them that way. We deal with it as a whole,” explained Dunn.

“Any student that knows Ms. Dunn knows she is a special lady,” said Hamburg School Superintendent Tracy Streeter.

Streeter thanked Hammond for “recognizing what we have in southeast Arkansas.”
