SPECIAL ELECTION

The Crossett City Council set the special election to fill the remainder of late Mayor Scott McCormick’s term for Aug. 11 during a special meeting Tuesday afternoon.

The filing period for candidates who wish to qualify will be May 5 to 12.

The council adopted a resolution on April 17, which called for the election. Tuesday’s vote actually set it on the calendar.

City Attorney James Hamilton said the dates are regulated by the Arkansas code.

The election has to be at least 90 days after the filing period and 60 days after the ballot draw, which will be noon June 10.

Early voting for the special election will be in the Ashley County Clerk’s Office, at 205 East Jefferson St. in Hamburg, and the Crossett Economic Development Foundation Community Center, 105 West Second St., in Crossett, beginning Aug. 4 and continuing through Aug. 7 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and concluding on Monday, Aug. 10, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

If a run-off is needed, voters will return to the polls on Sept. 1.

Early voting for the runoff will be conducted in the Ashley County Clerk’s Office and the Crossett Economic Development Foundation Community Center beginning Aug. 24, and continuing through Aug. 25 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and concluding on Monday, Aug. 31, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Whoever is elected will serve as mayor until Dec. 31, 2022.

Those wishing to run for the position will need to contact Ashley County Clerk Christie Martin.

The deadline to file to run is May 12.

Hamilton said those wishing to run can begin collecting signatures now. Potential candidates must have at least 30 signatures by registered voters.
