Georgia Pacific has reached an agreement to sell its chemical manufacturing operations, including the Georgia Pacific Chemical location in Crossett.

GP-Crossett Spokeswoman Jennifer King said that Louisville, Ky.-based Bakelite Synthetics has arranged to purchase all of GP’s chemical manufacturing facilities in the United States. The sale is subject to review and approval by government regulators.

Bakelite has an international presence in its sector of chemical manufacturing, King said, and specializes in making the chemicals that are manufactured in Crossett.

The spokeswoman said that the purchaser has agreed to keep all employees in place at full salary and benefits until the sale is closed.

“The indication seems to be that they will continue operations, just under a new name,” King said. “It looks like they are trying to expand their footprint here in the United States.”

The company declined to specify the amount of the sale or the amount at which the assets in Crossett are currently valued.

Bakelite is headquartered in Kentucky but has presences in Spain, Finland, Germany, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, the United Kingdom and China. The company has 11 manufacturing facilities, three technical centers and four product support laboratories.

The company’s online fact sheet characterizes it as, “a leading global integrated producer of phenolic specialty resins, molding compounds and engineering thermosets.”

“We develop tailor made solutions to help our customers meet their sustainability goals,” the sheet says. “Our products are widely used to turn renewable raw materials such as wood into highly engineered products and facilitate the transition towards a carbon neutral economy by providing technical solutions for the energy conservation in Building and Construction and in the Transport sector. We also focus on leveraging non-fossil fuel raw materials, improving energy efficiency in our operations and minimizing our environmental footprint.”
