Margaret Hill Smith receives key to the city of Crossett on 105th birthday

Woodrow Wilson was president when Margaret Hill Smith was born in Crossett on Dec. 23, 1913. Since then, she’s seen 17 other Presidents take office, two world wars, the space age, the fall of Communism and a whole lot more — and as a life-long resident of Crossett, she also saw the city shift from company town to open community. Among other things in her life, Smith worked at the Safeway Grocery Store from the time it opened until she retired 31 years later. Smith received a key to the City of Crossett on her 105th birthday Sunday. Mayor Scott McCormick and a number of family friends gathered in Smith’s apartment at the Pillars Sunday afternoon to present the key. McCormick also signed a proclamation officially declaring Dec. 23 as Margaret Hill Smith Day.
