A train and vehicle collision took the life of a Hamburg High School senior last week.
Reports from the Arkansas State Police said the accident occurred Jan. 30 on Highway 82 in Montrose when a 1996 Dodge Dakota failed to yield at a railroad crossing.
“The driver, a 17-year-old minor, failed to yield at the railroad signal lights, and traveled onto the tracks,” a news release from ASP Public Information Officer Liz Chapman said. “The driver was traveling eastbound, and the train was traveling northbound. The vehicle was struck by the train on the front right side. The impact caused the vehicle to rotate, and strike the train with its right side again. After impact, the passenger door was forced open and the vehicle continued to rotate, ejecting the driver and passenger out of the passenger door.”
The release also said that the minor driver was transported by Air Evac to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and the passenger, 18-year-old Chase Andrew “Drew” Barbee, was declared dead on the scene. Chapman said neither person was wearing a seatbelt.
