A Crossett athlete signed to run cross country with the University of Arkansas at Monticello last month.
Orlando Mondragon committed to the UAM crosscountry team in April.
Mondragon said he had other offers for soccer, but chose UAM because they offered him the most money.
Although Mondragon won’t officially move to Monticello until August, his coach already has him training for next season.
“We get text messages every day from our coach with our workouts,” Mondragon said.
Although Mondragon never stopped running, this was his first season to run in an organized cross-country program. This was the first season since 2013 that CHS offered cross-country as a school sport to students.
Coaches from CHS worked together to bring cross-country back and the program competed for the first time in three years last fall.
Even though cross-country wasn’t an official sport, Mondragon never quit running.
Mondragon traveled with his high school coaches to marathons and running events and competed his entire high school career.
Mondragon said he enjoys distance running and marathons because of the places he gets to run.
