The team from Hamburg was able to slug their way through the losers' bracket and ultimately fight back all the way to runners-up at the state 7- and 8-year-old Cal Ripken tournament last week.
They finished second to the undefeated Bryant team, to whom they had lost in the first round.
As visiting team, Hamburg took first bat. Easton Foster grounded out to the shortstop for the first out. Next up for Hamburg was Landon Whitaker, who stepped up and got a base hit. Luke Barley followed with a base hit to put runners on first and second base. Dalton Hoops popped out to the catcher for the second out. Charles Mooney came to the plate and hit the ball hard to right field, but the ball was caught by the Bryant right fielder.
On defense, the Hamburg team kept the score even in the first inning, sending Bryant in for three up, three down. The first batter hit a fly to centerfield that was caught on a nice catch by Dalyn Amos, the second hit was caught by the second baseman Bentley Stell and the third batter for Bryant flew out to Charles Mooney.
In the second inning, Garrett Hoops started things off with a base hit. Colt Tubbs followed, and was thrown out on a hard hit grounder to the shortstop, though Hoops was able to make second base. Bentley Stell hit the ball to the shortstop and was thrown out, but Hoops was able to move to third base. With two outs, Lane Maxwell came to the plate and hit the ball hard but was caught by the first baseman to end the inning.
