A Mississippi man has been arrested on capital murder charges following the death of his child’s mother at a child exchange in Ashley County.
Andra Qutel Fults, 26, of Greenville, Miss., was arrested on the charges Sunday afternoon, following the murder of Briana Nicole Campbell, 20, of Bastrop, La.
Ashley County Sheriff Tommy Sturgeon said the killing happened at a spot on U.S. 165 a few miles south of Portland, where the two were exchanging a young child they’d had together.
Campbell was shot with a handgun during the incident, Sturgeon said, but some details about what precipitated the killing are unclear.
The initial call to the Ashley County Sheriff’s Office about the incident was to report a stranded motorist, Sturgeon said, while a later call characterized it as a robbery.
Fults allegedly left the scene with the child, but was stopped and arrested by the Lake Village Police Department after the Ashley County Sheriff’s Department put out a be-on-the-lookout message for a his vehicle, Sturgeon said.
The young child was taken and placed with family members.
The weapon allegedly used in the killing has been recovered, Sturgeon said.
After making a first appearance in court Monday, Fults is being detained at the Ashley County Jail without bond.
