The Hamburg Lions boys’ soccer team wrapped up its 2017 season with a record of 20 wins, two losses and one tie.
Coached by Miguel Mondragon, the team made it through the state semifinals only to lose to state champion Dardanelle.
“This year started off great for us,” Mondragon said. “(For) our first match, we traveled to Texarkana with our varsity and junior varsity teams. Our junior varsity lost 1-0, and the varsity won 4-2. Our seniors made the difference in this squad.”
During the year, the Lions competed in two different tournaments, the Texarkana Invitational, which they won, and El Dorado for the Championship, a victory Hamburg claimed 4-1.
“We played Warren in the final and we won 2-0,” Mondragon said. “With us being a young sport in Southeast Arkansas, we wanted to play some of the top teams in the state to see where we were as a team.
“We played 5A State Champion Hot Springs and gave them a good match, losing 4-2. We learned a lot from playing them, and we went all the way to the state finals, where were beaten by the state champions."
